Dave Cowan, Senior Environmental Advisor

Dave is a senior environmental professional with over 35 years of experience in environmental assessment, permitting and compliance, including over 15 years in renewable energy development and operation.  Through his experience in commercial and non-profit organizations, both as a consultant and as an owner/developer, he provides Studioverde with unique insights into the application of SITES principles to commercial development, transportation infrastructure, and energy generation and transmission.

As Vice President of Environmental Affairs with a start-up renewable energy company, Dave built an environmental permitting and compliance program from the ground up.  He subsequently managed a team of professionals through multiple ownership transitions, ultimately encompassing wind and solar energy Development, M&A and Operations throughout the US, Canada, LATAM, APAC and EMEA markets.  He has been active in wind and solar professional organizations and committees for many years.

Dave’s work in habitat conservation, ecological restoration and preservation dovetails easily with Studioverde’s focus on SITES facilitation:  “SITES provides a tested framework for sustainable land development that can be applied to small and large scale wind and solar development.  Developers and owners who are looking to increase their sustainability index, design for resiliency and be a good neighbor to their community partners, should consider pursuing SITES certification for their projects.”

Dave has been certified as a Wildlife Biologist (The Wildlife Society), Professional Wetland Scientist (Society of Wetland Scientists), and Natural Resource Professional (State of New Hampshire).  He was a founder and first president of the Maine Association of Wetland Scientists. His early experience includes Research Associate with the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology and Seasonal Ranger with the National Park Service.  He holds a Master’s Degree in Oceanography from Stony Brook University and a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Biology from SUNY ESF.
